Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should revive their interest in Timo Werner

The German international, 23, who has scored 61 goals in 114 games for RB Leipzig since joining from Stuttgart back in 2016, has one year left on his current deal. The 23-year-old striker made 29 starts and one substitute appearances in the Bundesliga this past season, scoring 16 goals and provided seven assists in the process.

Timo Werner has attracted a lot of interest from some of Europe’s top clubs and Ralf Rangnick feels it will be difficult for him to stay at the Red Bull Arena given his current situation.

Tottenham were interested in signing Werner during the January transfer window, as per the BILD. However, a move didn’t materialise then but keeping the centre-forward’s situation at Leipzig in mind, Tottenham must reignite their interest in Werner.

Harry Kane has been a consistent goalscorer for Tottenham over the last few years, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top strikers. He has formed an excellent understating with the likes of Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli and that’s exactly why Spurs have been such an exciting team to watch under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, Kane had a difficult end to 2019 due to injuries and a loss of form. The England captain was out of action since suffering an ankle injury during the first leg of the quarter-finals against Manchester City, only to come back from injury in the Champions League final 2-0 defeat to Liverpool earlier this month.

Thus, if Pochettino and company are to improve and realistically challenge for trophies next season, they’ll need to have a bigger squad. And that means providing Kane with cover and competition is a must, considering Fernando Llorente is set to leave the club at the end of the month.

Kane needs a timely break if Pochettino wants his striker to be totally fit throughout the season and that’s why signing Timo Werner could be a brilliant move.

Werner is rated as one of the best young strikers in Europe and his ability to create chances in equal measure makes him an asset to have for any team. Blessed with blistering pace, flair, composure and technique, the German is a deadly finisher in front of goal and would complement Kane up front at Spurs. He could also act as a deputy to the England international or even line up on the left of attacking trio, with Son on the right.

The 23-year-old would undoubtedly not only bolster Spurs’ attacking ranks, but also add much-needed depth to the squad. Werner’s international pedigree and European experience will also come handy for Pochettino’s side.

Verdict

Suffering five ankle injuries in three years is enough to ring the alarm bells for Tottenham that Kane needs to have a reliable support from next season onwards. And Werner could be ideal for the 2019 Champions League runners-up.
