Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should make a move for Julian Draxler?

According to a report from the Daily Star, Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Julian Draxler from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

Julian Draxler, 25, started 22 out of 32 league games for PSG this past season, scoring three goals and supplying eight assists. The German international has been in and out of the team since the high-profile arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe a couple of summers ago.

The 25-year-old is deemed surplus to requirements at Paris and the French champions could sell the playmaker this summer to comply with the Financial Fair Play. That being said, Tottenham must go all out to sign Draxler from PSG this summer.

Julian

Spurs are expected to be busy in this transfer window after an incredibly exciting campaign in which they reached the Champions League final and finished in the top four in the Premier League. But the summer has possibly not got off to the best of starts for the fans and Mauricio Pochettino, with star midfielder Christian Eriksen admitting his desire to leave the club.

Eriksen said on Wednesday that he wants to ‘try something new’ after six seasons in north London, amidst interest from Real Madrid. The Denmark international has just one year left on his Tottenham contract and chairman Daniel Levy will only let the playmaker leave unless Real Madrid meet the £70m valuation.

Considering Spurs will lose Eriksen next summer on a free transfer, cashing him in now would be sensible for Pochettino and company. And with the money the club gets from the Dane’s sale, Pochettino should invest in the different areas of the pitch. Eriksen’s deal could also come handy in funding Draxler’s move, who is rated around £35m by PSG, as per the Daily Star.

Christian Eriksen

In terms of what Draxler can bring to the Spurs squad, he is a quick and creative playmaker who is very good at carving open defences. He has excellent ball control and can fire shots from distances.

The German can play anywhere across the front-line, and possesses exceptional technical ability as well as movement that would see him seamlessly slot into Pochettino’s system.

And whilst he wouldn’t be a like-for-like replacement for Eriksen, Draxler would certainly bring a cutting edge to Spurs’ attacking play, potentially forming a strong quartet with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min.

Verdict

If Pochettino’s Tottenham do manage to sign Draxler, it could be turn out to be an excellent piece of business for the North London outfit.
