Tottenham Opinion: Why Nabil Fekir would be a superb signing for Spurs

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas had told the club’s official website that Nabil Fekir wants to leave in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool were prepared to sign Nabil Fekir last summer before concerns were raised about the 25-year-old’s history of knee injuries. Despite the deal falling through, the 25-year-old has proved his fitness by notching 12 goals and nine assists, predominantly playing as a number 10.

As per Le Parisien, Tottenham are looking at the possibility of securing the services of Fekir, who at 25 is very much ready to take the next big step in his career. And as the Frenchman has just a year left on his Lyon contract, its perfect time for Spurs to land Fekir on a bargain deal this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t signed a player since January 31, 2018, and it’s clear that he needs reinforcements to his squad, regardless of guiding Tottenham to the Champions League final last season.

Spurs were very much in the running with Liverpool and Manchester City for the title, only for injury to key players and lack of squad depth ruining their 2018/19.

They managed to secure a top-four finish, however, it was a lesson Pochettino would have learnt. If Spurs are to realistically challenge for trophies next season, they’ll need players that would hugely improve the current squad. The club needs a couple of experienced, top-class individuals that can come in and make a huge difference.

With doubts over Christian Eriksen’s long-term future in North London, Pochettino may need to look at other playmakers. In that case, Fekir would be a potentially ideal replacement for Eriksen, who has just a year left in his contract at Spurs.

Fekir is one of Europe’s finest attacking playmakers, although he is adept at playing as a centre-forward or out wide. He has the technique and radar to create chances as well as score in equal measure.

A skilled schemer, the French international backs his ability to beat his marker and provide incisive through balls or crosses in the box.

The 25-year-old possesses good pace, fantastic dribbling skills, solid passing and an ability to have a pop at goal when space is provided. He uses his strength to fend off players and holds the ball up to allow his teammates to run beyond him, which makes Fekir such a top player to have in the team.

Also, the Frenchman’s set-piece ability and calmness in front of goal will be assets in Spurs’ fluid forward line.

Verdict

All in all, Fekir would be a fantastic addition to the Spurs squad and would immediately improve the first-team. Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham fans can expect a lot of assists and goals from the World Cup winner.
