Tottenham Opinion: Spurs must make a move for Marco Asensio
According to a recent report by AS English, Real Madrid were recently contacted by Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur about a possible transfer for Spanish star Marco Asensio in the summer. Even though the Spurs hierarchy might’ve been genuinely hopeful of getting a deal in place, things didn’t take shape.
The response from Real Madrid to this enquiry by Spurs could be interpreted as a message from Los Blancos to the rest of Europe – that their prized possession is not for sale.
While his contract does have a release clause which can be triggered at any time, the €700m valuation could come as a slight roadblock to any teams’ aspirations.
It has also been suggested that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is a long-time admirer of the young attacker and that they’ve made approaches in the past to bring him to North London. While he could fit perfectly into Spurs long-term plan, a move away from Real Madrid seems unlikely at this stage.
Other Premier League clubs including Liverpool are also in the race for the Spaniard’s signature. It has also been suggested that Asensio is happy at the Bernebau and believes in the tactics and style that Zinedine Zidane brings to the plate.
Tottenham’s mid-season collapse should be seen as a warning sign about the perils that the Premier League has to offer. Having made no signings in the summer, they struggled with injuries to key players and really had to slog through the busy winter period of the season. Their apparent dependence on Harry Kane for goals has also been a cause for concern.
Considering that Spurs are now a team aspiring for the league title, the addition of a player like Asensio could be the key to unlocking the bags of potential this squad possesses.
His tricky feet and sharp movement will be ideal to Spurs’ setup and the fact that he can pick out passes from distance will complement all the talented players around him.

With 30 league appearances to his name this season, the youngster has only managed to score 1 goal but has pitched in with 6 assists.
Over the course of what was a disastrous season for Real Madrid last year, Asensio wasn’t given enough opportunities to prove himself and a move to the Premier League with Tottenham could be the right way forward for his career.
