Why Jeremie Boga would be perfect for Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham

According to Calciomercato (h/t The Sun), Tottenham have joined Chelsea in the race to sign Sassuolo star Jeremie Boga.

Having failed to make the breakthrough at Stamford Bridge, Jeremie Boga, 23, moved to Italy in July 2018 for around £3.5million. He has since scored 11 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions for Sassuolo. The Ivory Coast international has 8 goals and 4 assists in 24 league matches for Sassuolo this season.

The report (h/t The Sun) adds that Frank Lampard’s Chelsea and Tottenham, along with Borussia Dortmund and Valencia are interested in Boga, whose contract with the Italian side runs down in 2022. That being said, Tottenham must do everything possible to win the Sassuolo attacker’s signature this summer.

Spurs crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday after being beaten 3-0 at RB Leipzig in the second leg, 4-0 on aggregate. The defeat meant Jose Mourinho is now without a win in his last six matches, making it the worst run of his entire career. They are now facing a first season outside Europe’s top competition in five years unless they can overturn a seven-point gap on fourth-placed Chelsea.

Mourinho has been struck by injuries to a number of key performers this term. Spurs captain Harry Kane and midfielder Moussa Sissoko have not played since January 1, while Son Heung-min and Steven Bergwijn could miss the rest of the season. With Spurs are currently eighth in the table, they have work to do, even if Manchester City’s ban from UEFA opens up the fifth place as a qualifying spot.

Regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League, Mourinho must beef up his squad next season. Kane has been out of the team for a long time and Mourinho has struggled to find a replacement for the centre-forward position.

With no back-up striker available, the Spurs boss should prioritise signing a striker this summer. In addition, he should also strengthen his attack by acquiring the services of Jeremie Boga.

Boga, who left Chelsea for Sassuolo in an attempt to fulfil his potential, has taken the Serie A by storm with 8 goals and 4 assists this season. The Ivory Coast international is capable of playing on either wing, as well as behind the striker and as a false nine. Tottenham have struggled since the departure of Christian Eriksen and therefore, Boga could also be used to construct their games.

The 23-year-old would bring competition within Mourinho’s squad. The Ivory Coast international is a quality player, scores goals and provides assists too, which is everything a winger needs to possess in his locker. In 52 appearances, Boga has netted 11 goals and registered 5 assists for Sassuolo, which is a good return for a young player.

Verdict

After signing Steven Bergwijn in January, it is necessary for Tottenham to add depth to their attacking options. And Boga’s qualities would be perfect for the club, provided he is able to replicate the same form he has shown at Sassuolo this term.
