Rangers FC Opinion: 2 strikers Steven Gerrard should consider this summer

Earlier this month, Alfredo Morelos signed a new contract with Rangers, extending his stay at the Ibrox until 2023.

Alfredo Morelos, 22, joined the Gers from HJK Helsinki in the summer of 2017 on a three-year deal. He has been in sensational form so far this season, with his goalscoring exploits attracting the attention of some of Europe’s leading clubs.

The likes of Eintracht Frankfurt, Cardiff and OGC Nice are among the teams to have tracked the stocky Colombian, reports the Daily Mail.

After Morelos extending his contract, Gerrard has hinted he could make a move for a striker in the summer after admitting Rangers are over-reliant on his 22-year-old centre-forward.

Despite Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe in the ranks, Gerrard has continually placed his faith on Morelos to lead the team’s attack.

But to iron out the team’s over-reliance on Morelos, Gerrard needs to add another striker to his ranks in the summer. That said, here are two players the Rangers boss should consider in summer to complement Morelos.

1. James Collins (Luton Town)

James Collins has been in sensational form for Luton Town, helping the club to first in the League One table. He has scored 20 goals is all competitions so far as Luton Town eye promotion to the Championship.

James Collins

Seeing his rich vein of form, Rangers should consider making a move for Collins. The 28-year-old did have a spell in the Scottish Premiership in the 2013-14 season, although he produced just six goals in 40 appearances. But having gone back to England and especially in the last couple of seasons, the former Republic of Ireland U21 international has scored a truckload of goals.

Collins is an old-fashioned centre-forward, known for his strength in the air and ability to bully defenders. He is excellent in the box and could perfect to complement the pacey and explosive Morelos at Rangers.

2. Nahki Wells (QPR)

Nahki Wells joined Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan from Burnley last summer but has managed just eight goals in all competitions.

The 28-year-old has blown and hot and cold and despite that, Rangers would be wise to consider him this summer after his loan spell expires at Loftus Road.

Nahki Wells

In Wells, Gerrard would get a pacey and agile striker, who has a knack of appearing in the right place at the right time in the penalty area. The 28-year-old can finish well in front of goal and can terrorise defences with his off the ball movement.

All in all, he could be an inspired signing for Rangers in their bid to beat Celtic to the Premiership crown.
