Why Leicester City should let Daniel Amartey leave amid Fulham interest

According to Football Insider (h/t Leicestershire Live), Fulham are looking to bring in Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey. The newly-promoted side tried to sign him previously but did not succeed. They are hopeful of a deal this time around.

Profile

Daniel Amartey is a 25-year-old Ghanaian midfielder who plays for Leicester City. He started his professional career at International Allies FC in 2010, which is a 2nd tier club based in Ghana.

He was scouted by Djurgardens in 2012 and signed for their youth team. In 2013, he was promoted to the senior team and played 41 times for them in the next two seasons. FC Copenhagen signed him in 2014 as he went on to make 63 appearances for the Danish side, while scoring 6 goals and assisting 3. In 2016, he moved to Leicester City but has failed to cement his place in the starting lineup. His long term injury problems have done nothing to ease things. So far, he has played just 64 times for the Foxes. However, he is a mainstay in the Ghana national team with 25 appearances till date. (h/t Transfermarkt)

What should Leicester do?

Leicester have a plethora of options in the defensive midfield position. Wilfred Ndidi is the first choice with Nampalys Mendy and Hamza Choudhury as backups. Amartey is clearly behind all of them and getting game time has been hard, while injuries have also played a part in his lack of game time.

Amartey did not feature in a single game for the first-team last season. He did play the ninety minutes in the Carabao Cup loss to Arsenal this season, but hasn’t been part of the matchday squad for their Premier League matches so far.

With so many players stacked in the midfield positions, Leicester should clear out a certain few players they won’t need. They would get some cash and clear a bit of their wage bill.

Verdict

Amartey is very unlikely to feature on a regular basis for Leicester and the best decision for both parties would be to accept Fulham’s offer. The player can get a fresh start and he will remain in the Premier League itself.

Also, Fulham would be getting a player who has a fair bit of Premier League experience to aid their chances of survival in the top flight this season. The player is at a stage of his career where he needs to play regularly. He can’t get that at Leicester and should move to Fulham.

Leicester, too, will benefit by raking in some cash for a player who is currently not part of the manager’s plans. A win-win for all parties.
