Three Premier League starlets who could move to the Championship in January

With the January transfer window only a couple of months away, teams will be sketching out plans to strengthen their squads as they look to achieve their targets for the season.

The winter transfer window offers a chance to a number of young fringe players the chance to secure a temporary move away to continue their development and gain valuable first-team experience.

To that end, here are three youngsters from Premier League clubs who should look to secure a loan move to an EFL Championship club for the rest of the season when the transfer window is open for business in two months’ time;

Scott McTominay (Manchester United)

Scott McTominay

The 21-year-old Manchester United midfielder burst on to the scenes last season and made a solid impression in his debut campaign, so much so that manager Jose Mourinho went on to name him the Manager’s Player of the Year at the end of the season awards ceremony.

Things haven’t been that smooth for McTominay this time out, however, with game time hardly coming his way. The Scotland international has made just four appearances so far this term, totalling up to just 155 minutes of on-field action. Given United’s torrid start to the season, his chances of getting first-team action going forward don’t look too bright either.

Leeds United and Aston Villa are believed to be interested in taking him on loan till the end of the campaign (h/t The Sun)and McTominay should jump at the opportunity without any hesitation.

Dominic Solanke (Liverpool)

Dominic Solanke

The supremely talented England international finds himself in a bit of a limbo at Liverpool. Having secured a move to Anfield last year, Solanke has struggled for game time for Jurgen Klopp’s side. While he did feature 27 times for the Reds’ first-team in his debut campaign, only on six occasions did he start a match and finished with returns of just one goal and assist apiece.

With Daniel Sturridge back in the reckoning this season, Solanke’s chances have further taken a hit. The 21-year-old hasn’t featured even once this season for Liverpool and hasn’t even made the matchday squad for their fixtures in the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League.

The striker is rated very highly in the English football fraternity and has shown he has the quality to make it count on the big stages. However, with no game time forthcoming at Anfield, it would be best for Solanke to move away on loan for the rest of the season, instead of warming the benches and playing occasionally for the reserves.

Juan Foyth (Tottenham Hotspur)

Juan Foyth

Another young footballer with bags of potential, the 20-year-old Argentine defender finds himself on the fringes of the first-team at Tottenham. Foyth joined the North London outfit last year and went on to make only eight appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. And an injury in the pre-season scuppered his chances of staking a claim for a regular berth this time out as well.

Foyth has not played a single minute for Spurs this season and has made the matchday squad only once – for the Carabao Cup tie against Watford back in September. With Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier all ahead of him in the pecking order at the North London club, chances are slim that his game time will see a drastic increase anytime soon.

And that is why the Argentine would be better off seeking a move away on loan for the rest of the campaign, amid interest from Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United. (h/t AS Argentina)
