Three players Aston Villa must sign this month

With the 2020 January transfer window up and running, clubs up and down the country must work hard and plug holes in their squad.

Aston Villa could well dip into the transfer market to bring in reinforcements for the second half of the season. A disappointing Christmas period has seen them lose to fellow strugglers Southampton and Watford. Now, Villa must strengthen their squad in order to survive in the English top tier.

While the winter window does not usually see the same sort of fees floated around like the summer months, there are plenty who need to improve their form in the coming months.

Here are 3 players Villa must consider signing in January.

Jarrod Bowen

According to BBC, Villa are in a four-way battle for the star along with Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton.

Jarrod Bowen has excelled for Hull City last season, scoring 22 goals along the way. At just 22, there is a bright future ahead of the wide man who would fill the gap left by right-winger Albert Adomah in summer, who has now left the club.

Bowen is deadly inside the box and would perfectly fit the bill. The forward’s dribbling ability would complement that of Grealish and McGinn perfectly going forward.

The 22-year-old has been on fire for the Tigers this season as well, racking up 16 goals in 26 league appearances. And he would be an excellent addition for Villa.

Bowen can play anywhere along the front-line. And the forward seems to have all of the attributes needed to succeed in the Premier League. He is quick, possesses superb technique and has a real eye for goal.

Domagoj Vida

Aston Villa are lining up a potential move for Domagoj Vida, according to Turkish Football (h/t Birmingham Live).

Vida joined Besiktas in 2018, following his part in Croatia’s run to the World Cup final. And Villa need defensive reinforcements, especially due to the injury suffered by first-choice centre-back Tyrone Mings during the Leicester City game.

Vida, 30, has collected 79 international caps and was part of a World Cup final. The battle-scarred Croatian is capable of throwing his body on the line to preserve a clean sheet and he would work wonders for Aston Villa, who are one of the relegation-threatened sides.

With Tyrone Mings injured, Villa have leaked goals at the back and even lost 3-0 to Watford, who played a majority of the game with 10 men. Signing someone like Vida should be on top of Dean Smith’s priority list.

Pedro

According to The Telegraph, Dean Smith is plotting a bargain deal for Pedro, who has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea.

Villa did sign Jota, Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi over the summer but Jota hasn’t really impressed since arriving and the other two have blown hot and cold. Smith has ended up using Jack Grealish out wide, thus epitomizing the need for a new winger.

In their quest to remain in the Premier League after getting promoted, Villa splashed out huge amounts of money in summer and signed players like Tom Heaton, Matt Targett, Marvelous Nakamba, Douglas Luis, Jota and striker Wesley. They also signed Tyrone Mings and Anwar El Ghazi permanently, both of whom were on loan last season.

But Villa have struggled to score from open play this term. The flanks have been a major of concern, as the wingers have failed to produce the goods on a consistent basis. Wesley has been isolated in most of the games and his services have not been utilized to the fullest.

The former Barcelona man has started only one match in the last two months with the likes of Christian Pulisic, Willian and Callum Hudson-Odoi above him in the pecking order.

Signing someone like Pedro would be a huge boost for Villa as the Spaniard is a serial trophy winner and would provide the maturity and experience to a young Villa side.
