  1. Virgil Van Dijk

Prior to the arrival of Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool was suffering from big defensive problems. But after he joined, the Reds were a totally different team and the Netherlands international became the answer to all their problems.

Though they paid a hefty £75 million transfer fee to Southampton, Van Dijk proved him to be worth every penny as he helped the Merseyside club to become title winners and a real force in the Champions League.

In his first season, Liverpool made it to the final of the European Cup while his second year saw the English side win the prestigious trophy. His brilliant performances in Europe earned him UEFA Player of The Year award, and he came extremely close to claiming the Balon d’Or in 2019 as well.

In a short period, the Dutchman silenced all those critics who doubted his price-tag. He is now viewed as one of the best players in Jurgen Klopp’s team.

  1. Alisson Becker

Like Virgil van Dijk, many were unconvinced when Liverpoolsigned Alisson Becker for £65 million from AS Roma, thus becoming the most expensive goalkeeper in the world for a short time, with Chelsea’s signing of KepaArrizibalaga later breaking that record.

The transfer amount spent on Alisson and the Dutch defender were roughly equal to the fee they received from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho. However, both defensive additions proved very soon why the German boss Jurgen Klopp was so insistent on hiring their services. In a single season, the Brazilian keeper bagged the Golden Glove in the Champions League, Premier League and in the Copa America.

  1. Naby Keita

Naby Keita cannot exactly be called a big success at Anfield. His time in Merseyside has been a mix of good and bad; however, he is still young and has time to improve his game. The Reds expended a hefty £52.7 million to sign him from RB Leipzig.

He was superb in the German side’s three-man-midfield system where he acted as a box-to-box midfielder. However, he didn’t thrive just as well when he moved to England where he seemed to struggle.

The Guinea international plays well when he gets regular football action, however, that hasn’t been the case for him at Anfield where Klopp has a constant rotational mindset of the team’s midfield.
