Why Southampton should target a move for Andy Carroll

Andy Carroll and injuries have gone hand in hand since the 30-year-old made the big move to Liverpool in 2013 from Newcastle United. The tall burly centre-forward started his career well, scoring 33 goals in 90 appearances for the Magpies, which earned him a big money move to Anfield much to the dismay of the Toon Army.

Now at West Ham United, it seems that his time with the Hammers could be over after six long years at the London Stadium.

With the January transfer window open, clubs are free to do business and one of West Ham’s moves in the winter window will be letting Lucas Perez and Andy Carroll go.

The two haven’t impressed Manuel Pellegrini this season, with Perez arriving less than six months ago. But things could get better for Carroll with Football London reporting that Southampton are interested in bringing him over to St Mary’s.

Given his injury concerns over the last few five odd years or so, there is an obvious risk for Southampton but it’s one they should gamble on. At the moment, the Saints are close to the prospect of relegation and while they have had a resurgence under new manager Ralph Hassenhuttl, he needs help.

The 30-year-old has bags of experience in the Premier League and loves a battle, given the fact that he’s a 6’foot 4 centre-forward. The Saints do have Charlie Austin to use as a centre-forward but the 29-year-old could be on his way out as well. This does leave Hassenhuttl without many options, having already sold Manolo Gabbiadini to Sampdoria (via BBC).

What does, however, make things interesting is the fact that Andy Carroll’s current deal with the Hammers expires at the end of the current season. This does give Southampton a chance to negotiate a better and more affordable deal for the centre-forward, and given the cut-rate price, Carroll would be worth the fee.

Not to mention his hold-up play is second to a few players in the Premier League and his aerial ability is second to none. That combined with Danny Ings’ agility will make the Saints one of the top candidates to avoid relegation.
