Why Federico Chiesa should choose Manchester United over Chelsea

According to The Express, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is ready to go head-to-head with Italian club Napoli to sign Federico Chiesa.

Chiesa, who currently plies his trade for Fiorentina, is one of the Serie A’s most exciting young talents and he is currently on the radar of other elite clubs in Europe. As a matter of fact, Fiorentina had turned down a £50million bid made by Juventus in the summer (h/t The Express).

An earlier report from The Metro claimed that Chiesa had been linked with a move to Manchester United. But in response, Fiorentina slammed a price tag in excess of £60million for the 20-year-old.

Chelsea have made a great start to the season and are currently unbeaten under Sarri. The Blues extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-1 drubbing of Cardiff City on Saturday.

While Chelsea have impressed with their performances, Manchester United succumbed to consecutive losses against Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur. They did show signs of improvement, however, as they ended Watford’s winning run with a 2-1 victory over the Hornets at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Although Chelsea are interested in a move (h/t The Express), Sarri will find it difficult to accommodate Chiesa in his first-team plans since the Blues already have top quality wingers in their ranks. Pedro and Eden Hazard, who scored the hat-trick in Chelsea’s win over Cardiff, have been in great form this season. Willian, who was not at his best in the first four games, opened his account as well with a goal in the previous game.

Furthermore, Chelsea also have the luxury of fielding a player like Marcos Alonso. The Spaniard has been in tremendous form in the current season and has already contributed with a goal and an assist. Furthermore, Chelsea have a talented youngster in Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has shown a lot of promise in the limited opportunities he has received.

Federico Chiesa

With that in mind, Federico Chiesa would be surplus to Chelsea’s demands. Hence, the player must opt to move to Manchester United.

Although United managed to beat Watford by a narrow margin, the Red Devils have plenty of room for improvement in all areas of the park. Even though United have Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford, they need a natural winger to fill the right flank.

Although Chiesa is primarily a left-winger by trade, he is equally adept at playing down the right. As a matter of fact, Fiorentina deployed him as a right-winger in their first three games this season. Another fascinating thing about Chiesa is that he is a two-footed player who is capable of firing accurate shots with his weaker left foot.

A traditional winger, Chiesa impresses with his technical ability, allowing himself to find passes and control possession with ease. Though not the quickest of wingers, Chiesa showcases commendable in-game intelligence, particularly while in possession. He has also been deployed as a wing-back in the past and he impressed with his work rate.

Manchester United have lacked cohesion in their attacking third and the link up play hasn’t been good enough to support the strikers. Given the attributes Chiesa possesses, he could be the final piece in the jigsaw for United. Thus, Jose Mourinho should make every effort to convince the board to table a handsome bid for the Italian in January.
