Premier League Opinion: 3 PL destinations for Danny Drinkwater

According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Chelsea star Danny Drinkwater’s nightmarish stay at Stamford Bridge reached an all new low this week when he wasn’t even named on the bench for the Europa League final with Maurizio Sarri leaving an empty spot on the subs list.

It has been suggested that the Blues are looking to offload their man in the summer but there seems to be a general lack of interest surrounding the Englishman.

He was a product of the Manchester United academy who had loan spells at a multitude of relatively smaller clubs including Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City and even Barnsley. He was sold to Leicester City for a fairly minimal price in the summer of 2012 after which he went on to win the league with the Foxes, forming an unbeatable partnership with N’Golo Kante in midfield.

After this league success, London side Chelsea decided to buy the pair of them in the next summer window. Although Kante was an instant hit, Drinkwater was never really a favourite amid the Chelsea fans. Although he was given a few opportunities under Antonio Conte, he didn’t do enough to warrant a place in the side and lately, things have only got worse.

Since Maurizio Sarri took over at Stamford Bridge, the 29-year-old’s involvement with the Blues side has been extremely limited. He was told very explicitly by Sarri at the start of the season that he wasn’t in his plans and since playing in the Community Shield prior to the start of the season, he has only been named on the bench twice.

Here are the 3 clubs who could reignite the midfielder’s broken career:

Aston Villa

The Villans could certainly use a player with the experience and know-how of Drinkwater. His passing and movement in midfield could help Villa stay in the Premier League again next season. He will be required to move the ball around and bring the wide players into the game and that’s exactly what he’s good at doing making this a good option.

Leicester City

The option of returning to Leicester City is probably one that the Englishman would jump at. He won the Premier League with the Foxes and that won’t be forgotten very easily by the fans or the staff. He would be welcomed back with both hands and given an opportunity to work his way back into the side as well and that’s exactly what he needs at this point in his career.

Watford

Vicarage Road is one of the stadiums where Drinkwater had a loan-stay and moving back to join to the Hornets is a move that he should definitely try and seize. His passing and movement could turn out to be useful to them. Considering that they were riddled with injuries last season, this move would make a lot of sense.
