Arsenal Opinion: Why the Gunners should go all out for Jordan Amavi?

According to a report from Football Espana, Barcelona are planning a summer swoop for Arsenal star Nacho Monreal as a back-up to Jordi Alba.

Nacho Monreal, 33, joined Arsenal from Malaga in January 2013 and has been a consistent performer for the north London outfit over the years. Despite his age, Monreal remains one of the top performers in Unai Emery’s squad but he is out of contract in June.

With Arsenal not willing to offer the Spanish defender a contract extension, Emery should plan a replacement for Monreal in the summer. In fact, the Arsenal manager should overhaul his backline, which is one of Premier League’s leakiest defences, conceding 39 goals thus far this season.

The Gunners’ defence has plenty of senior players such as Stephan Lichsteiner, Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Monreal as well. With all the defenders either having entered 30s or past that mark, it makes the overall Arsenal defence too slow in coping with the pace of Premier League forwards.

Hence, it’s an absolute necessity to invest on defenders this summer and Emery would do a wise job in making a move for Marseille left-back, Jordan Amavi.

Jordan Amavi, 25, never really settled in English football with Aston Villa but has enjoyed a new lease of life on his return back to France. The 25-year-old ended his Aston Villa hell in 2017, joining Marseille and has since gone from strength to strength. He had shown flashes of his potential at Villa Park but never really looked like fulfilling it.

At Marseille, however, Amavi has looked a very different player altogether. He has thrived under Rudi Garcia, impressing with his all-action displays down the left this season.

The Frenchman’s performances in Marseille colours prove how he has come a long way from the struggles at Villa and is ready to make the next big move of his career.

Due to his technique, stamina, work-rate and playing style, Amavi would be brilliant for Arsenal. He has made it very difficult for attackers to penetrate through the Marseille defence this defence.

He is an attacking left-back who always looks to pin back the opposition with his pace and direct approach on the ball. The former OGC Nice man has impressed with his decision-making and composure at the back, whilst also making a name for himself with his quick feet and trickery on the ball.

Verdict

A move to Arsenal can be the perfect step for Amavi. He can be the solution to the Gunners’ leaky defence and offer real quality as well as competition for Sead Kolasinac at the left-back position.
