Giovani Lo Celso would be a marquee signing for Tottenham next summer

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing PSG playmaker Giovani Lo Celso in the summer, with La Liga giants Real Madrid also weighing up a move for the 22-year-old who has impressed on loan at Real Betis this season.

The same report claims that Real Betis have the option of buying the Argentine sensation permanently for £21.5 million at the end of the season.

Regarded as one of the most promising young prospects of Argentina’s current generation of footballers, Lo Celso has made a big impression for Real Betis in the La Liga and the Europa League this term. The 22-year-old has accumulated 12 goals and 4 assists from 34 appearances for the Spanish outfit across all competitions.

A youth product of Argentinian club Rosario Central, Lo Celso was snapped up by PSG in 2016. However, he found first-team opportunities limited at the French capital due to stiff competition for places and was loaned out to Betis at the start of the campaign.

Tottenham’s interest in the impressive Argentine playmaker comes as a piece of welcome news to the fans, with the Lilywhites in dire need of bolstering their midfield options next summer. The departure of Mousa Dembele to China in January has left a big hole in the middle of the park, and Lo Celso, with his versatility, can be a handsome addition to the squad.

With Mauricio Pochettino preferring a diamond in the midfield, Spurs a certainly need more depth in their squad to change things around. Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp and Victor Wanyama are all capable of playing a holding role at the base of the diamond but the Lilywhites should look for an upgrade on their existing options. While Skipp and Winks are too young and inexperienced to deliver the goods every week, Wanyama has endured a tough time in north London due to recurrent injuries. Dier, on the other hand, is way too sluggish and does not offer much in terms of creativity and quality on the ball.

That is exactly why Giovani Lo Celso would be an ideal fit for Spurs. The 22-year-old is comfortable in central, defensive and attacking roles in the midfield and his ability to drive forward with purpose and chip in with valuable goals and assists should certainly appeal to the Lilywhites. Strikes from central midfield are always crucial and Lo Celso certainly ticks that box.

A technically-gifted and tactically-versatile midfielder, the Argentinian not only has a wonderful eye for a pass but he is equally adept at retaining the ball at his feet, dictating the tempo of the game with his wonderful range of passing. Blessed with wonderful dribbling skills and a hammer of a left foot, Lo Celso also excels with his positional play and tends to create chances with his deliveries from set-pieces. Furthermore, he is very disciplined and also contributes with his defensive work-rate, cutting out attacks with crucial tackles and interceptions and winning possession back for his team.
