Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs must make a move for Nicolo Zaniolo?

According to a report from Calciomercato, Tottenham have scouted AS Roma starlet Nicolo Zaniolo Sunday’s 2-0 Serie A victory against Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico.

Nicolo Zaniolo, 19, has been a revelation during his debut season with AS Roma, joining the Giallarossi as part of a player-plus-swap deal with Inter Milan, with Radja Nainngolan going in the other direction.

The Italian midfielder shot to fame with two goals in Roma’s Champions League knockout stage victory against FC Porto earlier this year.

His dazzling performances have caught the attention of Tottenham, who have defied the odds to reach the Champions League final. The report claims Tottenham are very much interested in Zaniolo; however, the 19-year-old has four years left on his contract and is still waiting for an extension from the club.

One of Tottenham’s biggest issues this season has been their lack of depth, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men failed to keep up the sustained pressure on Liverpool and eventual champions Manchester City.

While they have reached the Champions League final, Spurs need reinforcements in multiple positions ahead of the next season.

Given the north London outfit’s dependence on both Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane for goals, Pochettino needs to sign a dynamic, goalscoring player to the squad. That being said, adding someone like Zaniolo would help Tottenham flourish and challenge on all fronts next season.

Zaniolo is a versatile midfielder but has been used in different attacking positions at AS Roma this campaign.

He was the breakout star of the 2018-19 Serie A campaign, emerging as one of the most promising young players in Europe. The teenager has played 35 games across all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying six two assists for the Giallarossi.

Standing at 6ft 2in, the Italian combines his robust frame and natural athleticism with nimble feet and vision. He is capable of unlocking defences with his creativity and has the ability to create that extra yard of space for himself with sharp turns. At such a tender age, the best thing about Zaniolo is his courage take on defenders, beat them with pace and pick out the right pass in the final third.

However, Zaniolo is a raw prospect and has a lot of room for improvement to become the best in the business.
