Davie Selke would be an ideal signing for Southampton next summer

According to an earlier report from the Daily Mirror, Southampton were interested in signing Hertha Berlin forward Davie Selke, with manager Ralph Hasenhuttl aiming a raid on the Bundesliga to bolster his attacking options.

However, a move to the Premier League failed to materialize for Selke and the highly-rated youngster has made eyeballs turn with his recent purple patch in the Bundesliga which has seen him accumulate 3 goals and 5 assists from his last 8 outings across all competitions.

New boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has tried his best to turn things around with a more attacking brand of football. However, he needs the backing of the club’s financial resources next summer to bring in some quality players, especially in the attacking third, to ensure that the Saints don’t have to fight the relegation battle once again next term.

To put things into perspective, Davie Selke would be an ideal addition to Southampton’s squad ahead of the upcoming season.

The likes of Charlie Austin and Shane Long have struggled to make an impact while Liverpool loanee Danny Ings has been a bit too inconsistent to rely upon. Last summer’s marquee signing Mohamed Elyounoussi hasn’t been able to make much of a difference either, leaving the likes of Nathan Redmond and youngster Michael Obafemi with too much to do.

Selke, who played for RB Leipzig under Hasenhuttl earlier in his career, has been tipped to become the next superstar in German football since his teenage days but the towering centre-forward is yet to fulfil his true potential. However, he has shown enough promise in the Bundesliga over the last few years to prove that he is capable of achieving much better.

A part of the German side that won the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Selke is an absolute beast of a centre-forward with his towering and sinewy 6ft.5 inches frame. The former prolific German youth international is blessed with the instincts of an old-school centre-forward, allowing him to make runs behind the backline and lose his marker inside the box.

He is a strong and powerful striker who likes to physically dominate the defenders, often beating his counterparts to the aerial balls delivered into the box from crosses and set pieces. However, he has a certain degree of deftness to his game as well, with his silky dribbling skills combined with his ability to shield the ball and link up with his teammates making him a more complete player.

To sum it up, Selke has all the attributes of developing into a top-class forward at the Premier League level and Southampton can improve massively in the final third with the German’s imposing presence inside the box next season. That said, they should not hesitate to reignite their interest and match Hertha Berlin’s £14 million valuation of the 24-year-old striker.
