Barcelona’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Roma means that the club will have won the tournament just once over the course of the past seven seasons, even with Lionel Messi in their ranks.

Messi was part of the Blaugrana squad that won the tournament in 2005/06, before taking on a starring role in the triumphs of 2008/09 and 2010/11.

The only European success in the years since the annihilation of Manchester United at Wembley was when the treble was claimed in 2014/15.

Making the situation even more devastating for Barcelona is the fact that Real Madrid have won three of the Champions Leagues since, while Chelsea and Bayern Munich have also lifted the trophy.

The exit of the Spanish giants from Europe’s elite club competition could see a few changes made at the Camp Nou before the World Cup kicks off this summer.

However, the most important question should be about how Barcelona can replace Neymar, a year after the Brazilian’s departure.
