Morpheus

Morpheus is one of the Endless, godlike entities who embody various forces of nature. In season one of The Sandman, we met four of them – Dream, Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Despair. Season 2 looks set to explore more about them along with new characters that emerge – Allan Heinberg has teased that these next episodes may adapt Season of Mists and Brief Lives comic book storylines by Neil Gaiman himself!

As the first season ended with multiple characters conspiring against the King of Dreams, it makes sense that a sequel would address this plot point. Though details about any potential second season remain undisclosed at this time, its renewed order provides hope to fans worried Netflix might cancel it after its initial run.

Neil Gaiman had earlier announced that production on season two had begun prior to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halting work, with photos emerging of Tom Sturridge (Morpheus).

Lucienne

Tom Sturridge will reprise his role of Morpheus in The Sandman season 2, while Gwendoline Christie returns as Lucifer Morningstar, ruler of Hell. Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander and Vivienne Acheampong should also reprise their roles from season 1.

Netflix released their inaugural image for Lucienne, the Librarian of Dreaming played by Vivienne Acheampong. Lucienne can be seen wearing traditional formal wear rather than her comic book character’s trademark bow-tie and glasses; and stands on what appears to be an uninhabited gray beach in this black-and-white composition.

As opposed to its first season which featured standalone episodes, it’s likely that The Sandman Season 2 will focus on one or more graphic novels at once. As such, it could feature the Prodigal, one of Destiny, Despair, and Desolation who abandoned his duties and realm in pursuit of mortal romance. Furthermore, more Endless members should also be introduced along with the pantheon of gods and demons.

Lucifer Morningstar

After discovering that Netflix subscribers overwhelmingly loved Season One of Sandman, many are eagerly awaiting any potential second season release. Though it’s too soon to tell for sure if one will come or not, many anticipate one being made available soon.

Season 1 took inspiration from Preludes and Nocturnes, The Doll’s House, and Dream Country books; Season 2 is anticipated to build upon those themes further by including stories from A Game of You, Seasons of Mists, Brief Lives books or possibly new characters such as Delirium Destruction Destiny (Gaiman’s take on Norse gods).

Tom Sturridge will undoubtedly reprise his role of Morpheus; Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death; Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar and Lucienne; Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne; Asim Chaudhry will play Abel; additional additions could include Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Joely Richardson as Ethel Cripps (Niamh Walsh as Young Ethel Dee); Nina Wadia as Fate Crone / Souad Faress as Fate Maiden).

Desire & Despair

Gaiman teased fans this summer that filming on The Sandman season two had begun at Shepperton Studios and that it should take only nine months to shoot the second installment.

It is likely that the sequel will cover at least part of The Sandman comics’ fourth volume, Season of Mists. This storyline follows Morpheus as he takes control of Hell, drawing potential successors from pantheons of deities as potential competitors for Morpheus’ ruling position.

Tom Sturridge will likely reprise his original season role of Morpheus; Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death; Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer Morningstar); and Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne will likely all make appearances; other regular and guest stars from Kyo Ra/Vanesu Samunyai as Rose Walker; Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Eddie Karanja (Jed Walker), Patton Oswalt as Matthew The Raven; Sanjeev Bhaskar (Unforgotten), while Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), will make appearances; it is expected that Element Girl will make appearances too!

Destiny

Sandman Season One introduced audiences to four of the Endless: Dream, Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park) and Despair (Donna Preston). It seems likely that in Season 2, Delirium and Destiny will also join this cast of godlike beings who make up this family of beings known as Endless.

The second season of Netflix series adaptation of The Sandman will likely adapt more comic arcs. However, since two early books in The Sandman were previously covered in Season 1 bonus episodes “Dream Country” and “Calliope”, those may be excluded.

Tom Sturridge reprises his iconic role of Morpheus in this Netflix series. He’s joined by an impressive supporting cast that includes Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer Morningstar), Sandra Oh (Johanna Constantine) and James McAvoy (David Shakespeare). Based on Neil Gaiman’s award-winning comic book series of the same name, produced by Warner Bros Television and DC Entertainment with Gaiman, Goyer and Heinberg serving as executive producers; George Steele and Will Baldy from Peaky Blinders fame handled cinematography while Sarah Arthur from Sherlock and A Discovery of Witches designed costumes.
