The Dalai Lama ‘Tenzin Gyatso’ is looked up to as the holiest figure in Tibetan Buddhism

Chris Evert and thousands of users on social have expressed their disgust at the gestures of the Dalia Lama after a short clip of his interaction with a young boy in India has gone viral on the internet. In the video, the Dalai Lama can be seen kissing a young boy on his lips and asking the boy to ‘suck his tongue’ at a public event in India. This incident took place in February at the Dalai Lama’s temple in Dharamshala, which was attended by 100 young Indian students and the footage has caused shock waves on social media.

Totally inappropriate…ugh”, Evert wrote on Twitter as her reaction to the video. She was not alone as thousands of users on social media echoed similar sentiments, terming the behaviour as ‘inappropriate’, ‘scandalous’ and ‘disgusting’.

The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since 1959 when Tibet was annexed by China and is one of the most respected and popular spiritual leaders in the world. However, his behaviour on this occasion has certainly not gone down well with his millions of followers across the globe.

The office of the Dalai Lama has issued a public apology after the incident

The Dalai Lama’s behaviour has been condemned widely after the video went viral on the internet. His holiness can be clearly seen asking the young boy to come up to the platform where he was seated and all his gestures are well recorded. Following the outroar on social media platforms, the office of the Dalai Lama was quick to issue a public apology.

The statement reads: “His holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused. His holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident.”

Whatever the Dalai Lama’s intentions maybe, it has definitely not gone down well with the general public and his followers. It remains to be seen if the Dalai Lama himself comes on record to apologise for this behaviour.
