Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov has opened up about the importance of gender equality in Tennis and other sports. Shapovalov’s girlfriend Mirjam Bjorklund is a professional tennis player as well and the disparity in prize money has opened his eyes about the need for equality in Tennis. As the World celebrates the International Women’s Week, Shapovalov feels that this is the perfect time to urge fans and people across the globe to raise their voice for women and gender equality.

“I know that tennis is by far the best major sport in the world for women in terms of the way these prizes are shared. It has grown so much over the last 30 years thanks to Billie Jean King and the formation of the WTA Players’ Council. Things are definitely going in the right direction. But overall the gap is still huge,” an excerpt reads from Shapovalov’s blog for The Players’ Tribune. Billie Jean King herself appreciated the Canadian for advocating for gender equality and wrote on Twitter: “Thank you, @denis_shapo, for sharing the importance of equality in tennis. Equality does not mean less for some. Instead, it ensures more for all. There is so much work left to do.” Jean King has always been a pillar of strength for female athletes within the sports industry and it’s great to see more young athletes are now coming up and sharing the same stance.
