Serena Williams lost to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open – marking an end to her professional tennis career

Lewis Hamilton took to social media to pay tribute to Serena Williams as her legendary career ends. Williams lost to Tomljanovic 5-7, 7-6, 1-6 last night in what turned out to be the last match of her professional career. Hamilton, who will be in action today at the Dutch GP, took out time to bid her goodbye through an emotional post on Instagram.

Hamilton is an ardent admirer and supporter of Williams. Last month when Serena announced her decision to retire, Hamilton was one of the first to pay tributes to her. Williams has previously said that she and Hamilton are “super close” and “best friends” and they have an incredible amount of mutual respect for each other.

Serena has spent much of the past few years off the court preparing for the moment she moved on, including by setting up a venture capitalist company, Serena Ventures, and investing in various organisations. However, she explained that one of her biggest reasons for retirement is her intention to further expand her family. Williams gave birth to her first child, Alexis Olympia, in 2017.

Serena also plans to grow her business. She is the founder of Serena Ventures, which raised $111 million in an inaugural funding round earlier this year. The venture capital firm focuses on startups with underrepresented founders (which make up 76% of its portfolio), including women, Latinos and African Americans and other underrepresented groups.
