World No.1 Iga Swiatek defeats Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 6-0 in her first round match at the Roland Garros in Paris

Iga Swiatek defeated Ukraine’s Tsurenko in just 54 minutes – her fastest win of 2022. The 2020 Roland Garros champion extended her winning streak on the WTA tour to 29 matches. The Polish star’s winning streak is the longest by any player on the WTA Tour since 2013.

Since a run to the Australian Open semi-finals in January, Swiatek has completely dominated the women’s game and won her past five tournaments. She earned title victories in Doha and Indian Wells, then became world number one following Australian rival Ashleigh Barty’s shock retirement in March. Afew days later Swiatek won the Miami Open, and then went on to triumph in Stuttgart and Rome.

Such has been Swiatek’s dominance on the WTA tour in the recent past, a fan at the Philippe-Chatrier court was seen with a poster, “She may never lose again.” Well, the form Swiatek is in right now, one would certainly not want to bet against it.

Speaking after the match, Swiatek said – “It was a pretty good match for me. I just want to keep going, I know the streak will someday stop but I’m just focusing on my game and not the numbers.”

Swiatek will face either American Alison Riske or Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the second round.

Can Iga Swiatek go all the way and clinch the French Open title?

Iga Swiatek has had a dream 2022 so far. The Polish star became the World No.1 in women’s singles after winning both the events of the Sunshine Double – the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open 2022. Prior to that, she won the Qatar Open in Doha.

The 20-year old became the youngest woman to win the Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same season. Having won in Doha in February, Swiatek became the first player ever to sweep the first three WTA 1000 events in a season.

The Polish star is in red hot form and the current World No.1. The top seed certainly looks like the player to beat in this tournament.
