Roger Federer has been out of action since Wimbledon last year

Tennis legend Roger Federer seems set to return to the circuit after missing a huge chunk of the 2021 season.

The Swiss star last played at Wimbledon in 2021 and exited the tournament in the quarterfinal stage. Federer was looking to win his 21st Grand Slam that year, but injuries took their toll. The 40-year-old then underwent knee surgery and did not put a proper return date.

However, it seems there is some good news for Federer fans as Rfed is set to return for the Swiss Indoors ATP 500.

Michal Samulski shared the news on social media and confirmed that Federer would be playing his first match of the tournament on October 25.

“Roger Federer is confirmed for ATP500 Swiss Indoors in Basel. He will play his opening match on Tuesday, October 25. After getting through the first round, his next match will be on Thursday, October 27.”

This would be a great tournament for Federer to return to, especially with the home crowd cheering him on. Federer should start as the favourite and it is to be seen how that goes for him.

Will Roger Federer return earlier than expected?

Returning in October does put a spanner in some of Federer’s plans. He would miss out on all of the Grand Slam tournaments with the US Open normally taking place in August.

Federer could make a return earlier than October, and it is to be seen what is next for the Swiss ace. His desire to win and compete at the top level is still there, but with Novak Djokovic doing his bit to win 21, it will be tough for Federer to get his hand on a Grand Slam trophy.

Rafael Nadal already has 21 to his name, and the Spaniard seems to be in better shape than Federer at the moment.

Federer had earlier confirmed he would return for the Layer Cup in September 2022.
