In what comes as great news for tennis fans, 21-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic, has been given the green signal to play in the 2023 Australian Open.
Last year, Novak Djokovic was deported from Australia before last year’s Australian Open. This was because of his unvaccinated status. The COVID-19 regulations were such that an unvaccinated Djokovic had no chance of playing in the first major of the year. Australia has since lifted its requirement for visitors to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19.
The former world No. 1 is reportedly set to get a visa. According to national broadcaster ABC, and a few other news outlets, the Serbian legend may take part in the 2023 Australian Open. Djokovic was handed a ban of three years but that can be overturned if Prime Minister Anthony Albanese steps in.
Last year, Djokovic had to watch his rival Rafael Nadal win his 2nd Australian Open title. Djokovic was allowed to play in the French Open and Wimbledon. Nadal ousted him in the quarterfinals at the clay-court major. However, Djokovic captured his 21st Grand Slam by winning the Wimbledon title.
In other tournaments, Djokovic has shone brightly. He won the Italian Open, the Tel Aviv Open, and the Astana Open and is currently playing his trade at the ATP Finals in Turin.
