Fans have been waiting eagerly to watch the stalwart back in action. The 20-time Grand Slam champion is officially not a ranked player anymore. The Swiss tennis sensation will be an unranked player once he makes his return. He has confirmed that he will participate in the Laver Cup and the Swiss Indoors later this year.

This is the first time since 1997 that Federer will be playing as an unranked player. The 40-year-old is currently one Grand Slam triumph behind Novak Djokovic and two behind Rafael Nadal. He was ranked 97th before this year’s Wimbledon began.

Federer was seen during the centenary celebration of the center court at the All England Club. The veteran was looking dapper in a black suit and received a huge ovation from the fans upon arrival on the court.

His last match was at Wimbledon last year where he lost in the quarterfinal to Hubert Hurkacz.

Roger Federer gives a hint about his retirement plans

Roger Federer is loved and respected by tennis enthusiasts all over the world. The news of him dropping out of the ATP rankings for the first time in 25 years has certainly broken the hearts of many fans. Unfortunately, that is not the only bad news coming our way.

Speaking to a Dutch newspaper, Federer clearly hinted that he can retire sometime soon. Federer was quoted as saying, “I am a winner lover, but if you’re not competitive anymore, then it’s better to stop. I don’t think I need the tennis. I am happy with the little things, like when my son does something right and when my daughter comes home with a good grade.

“Tennis is part of, but not my entire identity. I want to be and remain successful, and put a lot of energy into business – probably give more than I should sometimes, but that can also be done outside of sports. I know a professional career can’t last forever and that’s okay.”

“It feels very strange for me not to play Wimbledon this year and to watch it on TV, as I’ve been there every time since 1998.”
