Garbine Muguruza and coach Conchita Martinez formed a very successful partnership and worked together for more than five years.

Former WTA World No.1 Garbine Muguruza has split with her coach Conchita Martinez. Muguruza and Conchita have been working together full-time since 2019 and won multiple prestigious titles over the years. Muguruza is currently on a short break from the professional tour and the 29-year-old felt this is the perfect time to look for a change as she aims to challenge for the top spots once again.

Conchita Martinez officially confirmed the news of their separation. “Garbiñe and I have decided by mutual agreement to end our partnership. These have been fantastic years, full of great emotions and wonderful experiences, both on and off the court. It has been a pleasure working with you, Garbiñe. I wish you the best”, the 1994 Wimbledon Champion wrote on Twitter.

Some of Muguruza and Conchita’s notable achievements include winning the prestigious WTA Finals, Conchita being named the WTA Coach of the Year in 2021 for her work with Muguruza besides Muguruza’s historic 2017 Wimbledon Championship victory when Conchita worked with her as a part-time coach.

Garbine Muguruza has made a poor start to 2023

Muguruza has had a horrific start to the 2023 season and the Spaniard is currently on a short break to get her focus and rhythm back. She has played only four tournaments so far this year and has suffered first-round exits from all of them. The two-time Grand Slam Champion is currently ranked World No.132 in women’s singles and has been out of action from the WTA tour for more than three months.

Muguruza had an incredible 2021 but last year was pretty disappointing in terms of her results. She had hoped to start afresh in the 2023 season but things didn’t turn out as planned. After her first round exit at the Lyon Open, Muguruza revealed her decision to take a short break from the tour. “Spending time with family and friends and it’s really been healthy and amazing so I am going to lengthen this period till summer. Therefore I’m going to miss the clay and grass season. Thanks for all the lovely messages and will be updating you guys” – she revealed to her fans and followers on social media.
