Local favourite Nick Kyrgios had to, unfortunately, pull out of the 2023 Australian Open due to a knee injury
Nick Kyrgios‘ withdrawal from the Australian Open comes as a shock to everyone in the Tennis fraternity. Despite it being really heart-breaking, Eurosport reporter Barbara Schett shared a hilarious anecdote regarding how she came to know about the news. Kyrgios confirmed his withdrawal during a conference on Day 1 at Melbourne Park and revealed that a routine MRI scan has indicated a small tear and a cyst in his lateral meniscus.
Barbara was not attending Kyrgios’ press conference and was actually in her bathroom at home when she came to know about the Australian’s decision. In the reporter’s own words: “I was actually in the bathroom and next to me was Pam Shriver. And she starts yelling out, ‘Babsi, Babsi’. I’m like, What? I thought she needed some toilet paper or something. ‘No’, she said. Nick Kyrgios has pulled out. And that’s how I found out.” Schett is a former Austrian professional Tennis player, who currently works as a commentator and presenter for Eurosport.
What’s the road ahead like for Nick Kyrgios?
Nick Kyrgios must be absolutely gutted to miss the first Grand Slam of the year on home turf. He is the defending men’s doubles champion and it’s indeed sad that he won’t get a fair chance to defend his title. However, it’s time for Kyrgios to focus on his fitness and make a quick recovery. Kyrgios is expected to return to Canberra for surgery in the next couple of weeks.
Kyrgios is utterly disappointed but has vowed to come back strong. He ltook to Twitter and assured his well-wishers that he will give it his all to get back into the best possible shape after fans expressed how much they are going to miss him. “I know. Trust me, my heart is broken. But I’m on the table Monday to get fixed, I’ll be back”, he tweeted. Kyrgios will require an arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is expected to be out of action for at least two months.
