British tennis player Cameron Norrie wins first ever title at Los Cabos
Cameron Norrie beat American Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-2 to win the Mifel Open, winning his first tour-level crown.
The Brit was 0-4 in ATP Tour finals but was coming into the final without dropping a set.
“I feel very happy. I couldn’t be more proud of myself, proud of my team and how I handled the week. It’s a huge bonus. It was always a goal of mine to get my first title. Obviously I’d lost three finals this year, so it was very nice to get over the line today. I’m going to enjoy it tonight.”
Norrie is 35-14 this season, which is tied for third this season. He is tied with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic with 35 wins. The British No. 2 was coming after his exit in Wimbledon to the great Roger Federer.
Nakashima was hoping to become the youngest American ATP Tour title-winner since a certain Andy Roddick. Roddick is a former World No. 1 and Grand Slam winner.
Cameron Norrie’s 2021
Norrie has been massively impressive in the 2021 ATP season. His first title ends his long-wait after being stuck at the final hurdles on multiple occasions. He will be ranked at 29, on Monday which signals his best form in his career.
Norrie recently reached the final of Queens’ but fell to Matteo Berretini in the final. Berretini, eventually reached the Wimbledon final but lost out to Novak Djokovic. He has also beaten Dominic Thiem this year in Lyon.
With an impressive record, the Brit goes into the final leg of the season ahead of the US Open in August. He played Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Stefanos Tsitispas in the other finals this year. He is currently 12th in the Race to London for the Nitto ATP Finals.
