Alexander Zverev squandered four set points in the first set. The Spaniard showed his composure in the crunch moments to bag the first set 7-6 (10-8). The 25-year-old dominated the early goings of the second set. He led 5-2 before dropping four out of the next five games to the veteran.

During the last point of the 12th game, Nadal played a forehand into open space and the youngster rushed to his right to make the return. However, he twisted his ankle in the process and fell on his back, grimacing in pain.

Zverev experienced excruciating pain as Nadal was quick to check on his opponent’s well-being. The medical team rushed in and later it was confirmed that Zverev would not be able to continue the match.

We had to wait a little longer to get the reports on the extent of Zverev’s injury. He had torn all three lateral ligaments in his right ankle. Zverev walked back onto the court with the help of crutches and received a great ovation from the crowd. Alexander Zverev underwent surgery last month and promised to do everything to come back stronger.
