The 22-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime came of age in 2022 and produced some stunning results. He won his first ATP Tour-level title this season.
The Canadian youngster always had the potential but in 2022, he has done just. After turning pro in 2017, Felix Auger-Aliassime didn’t have any ATP Tour-level singles title in his trophy cabinet heading into 2022.
Auger-Aliassime began his season with a triumphant campaign in the ATP Cup. He played for Team Canada alongside Denis Shapovalov and defeated the Spanish team of Roberto Bautista Agut and Pablo Carreno Busta in the final.
Auger-Aliassime went on to play in the Australian Open. He was the ninth seed in the competition. He defeated former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic in the fourth round but lost to Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals. This was his first appearance in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
The talented player oozed class at the ATP Rotterdam Open and went on to win the title after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. This was his first ATP Tour title triumph. He had an unfortunate record of losing 8 previous finals. Auger-Aliassime lost his ninth final at the Open 13 against Andrey Rublev in straight sets.
Auger-Aliassime had a disastrous campaign in the BNP Paribas Open as he was ousted in the round of 64 by Botic van de Zandschulp. In Miami, Felix once again suffered a loss in the round of 16 against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic. At the Grand Prix Hassan II, Auger-Aliassime was the top seed. However, his run was ended by Alex Molcan in the round of 16. The run of disappointing results continued as he lost in the round of 32 at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
Auger-Aliassime finally produced a decent result at the Barcelona Open. The third seed made it to the quarterfinals and lost to Diego Schwartzman. He followed it up with quarter-final runs in the next three tournaments that followed – Estoril Open, Madrid Open, and the Italian Open.
At the French Open, he produced his best result by reaching the fourth round. After reaching the semis in the Libema Open and quarters in the Halle Open, Auger-Aliassime was ousted by Maxime Cressy in the first round at Wimbledon.
After the disastrous Wimbledon campaign, Auger-Aliassime failed to progress beyond the round of 16 at the Hall of Fame Open. He returned to form at the Los Cabos Open and made it to the semis. He lost to third seed Cameron Norrie. At the Canadian Open, he lost to Casper Ruud in the quarters. Auger-Aliassime entered the Western & Southern Open as the 7th seed. In the US Open, he didn’t have a great time as he lost in the second round.
The Spectacular flourish at the finish for Felix Auger-Aliassime
The promising athlete delivered big time in the latter half of the season. After a shock first-round exit in Astana, Auger-Aliassime won the Firenze Open.
Auger-Aliassime went on to win two more tournaments on the trot. At the European Open, he defeated Sebastian Korda, and at the Basel Open, he got the better of Holger Rune.
The 19-year-old Holger Rune avenged the loss at the Paris Masters. He defeated Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals in an emphatic fashion and went on to win the title.
Auger-Aliassime went on to make his debut at the ATP Finals. He didn’t have a good start as he lost to Casper Ruud in the first group-stage encounter. He bounced back strongly and outplayed the top seed, Rafael Nadal, in the next match. In a must-win clash against Taylor Fritz, Auger-Aliassime fought hard but eventually lost the match in three sets.
During the season, he won 60 matches and lost 27. He won four titles and finished at No. 6 in the ATP rankings. He was also part of the teams that won the ATP Cup, the Laver Cup, and the Davis Cup.
