The talented Andrey Rublev had a great season overall – let’s take a closer look at the Russian star’s performances in 2022.

Olympic gold medalist Andrey Rublev began the season at the Australian Open. He entered the tournament as the 5th-seeded player and lost to Marin Cilic in the third round. He couldn’t equal his best result at the first Grand Slam event of the year as in 2021, he had made it to the quarterfinals.

Rublev followed it up with a run to the semifinals at the ATP Rotterdam. He was ousted by eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime, who came back after losing the first set. Rublev avenged that loss to Auger-Aliassime in the finals of the Open 13.

The Russian youngster won the match in straight sets. He doubled his joy by coming out victorious in the doubles event as well alongside Denys Molchanov.

Rublev followed it up with another win at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The second seed defeated Jiri Vesely in straight sets in a one-sided final. At the BNP Paribas Open that followed, Rublev made it to the semis but lost to Taylor Fritz. Rublev’s first disappointing campaign in 2022 came at the Miami Open. He was the fifth seed in the tournament but his run ended in the round of 64 as he was outplayed by Nick Kyrgios.

The Monte-Carlo Masters followed and Rubev squandered a first-set win to go down to Jannik Sinner 7-5, 1-6, 3-6. Rublev produced a phenomenal effort at the Serbia Open as he defeated home favorite Novak Djokovic in the final to take home the title. The Madrid Open followed, and Rublev lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in a riveting quarter-final encounter.

Sixth-seeded Rublev lost to Filip Krajinovic in the round of 32 of the Italian Open at the Grand Stand Arena. At the French Open, Rublev equalled his best result at the clay-court major as he reached the quarterfinals. Once again, his campaign came to an end with a loss to Cilic.

In April, the All-England Club announced that Russian and Belarusian players will not be allowed to take part in the Wimbledon Championships in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Rublev had a disappointing campaign at the Halle Open as the third seed lost to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the round of 32. He bounced back at the Swedish Open and made it to the semis before losing to Sebastian Baez.

After a surprising exit in the round of 16 at the German Open, Rublev lost to Yoshihito Nishioka in the semifinals of the Citi Open.

In Montreal, Rublev lost to British No. 2 Dan Evans in the round of 32 in straight sets. In the final tournament prior to the US Open, the Western & Southern Open, Rublev lost to Taylor Fritz in the round of 16.

Rublev reached the quarterfinals at the US Open for the third time in his career. He crashed out of the tournament after losing to an in-form Frances Tiafoe in straight sets.

Rublev reached the semis at the Astana Open but lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He carried the good form into the Gijon Open and won the title having dropped just one set in the whole tournament. At the Vienna Open and the Paris Masters, Rublev in the round of 16.

His season ended with a strong campaign at the ATP Finals. In the group stages, he defeated Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas and lost to Novak Djokovic. In the semis, he was bettered by Casper Ruud.
