This iconic 3D action-adventure platformer game developed by Nintendo and released for GameCube will bring you an exciting and challenging experience. The game features Mario as the main protagonist, who is accompanied by a sentient water pump known as F.L.U.D.D. With a lot of different tasks and challenges to overcome, this guide will provide you with various tips and tricks to help you complete the game efficiently.

From utilizing F.L.U.D.D.’s unique abilities to finding all the elusive Shine Sprites to defeating the game’s formidable bosses, our Super Mario Sunshine guide will be a valuable resource for you to optimize your gameplay and become a true Super Mario Sunshine master.

Super Mario Sunshine Guide: Blue coins

As players progress through the various levels in the game, they will begin to encounter blue coins scattered throughout the areas. These coins may not appear significant at first glance, but they play an important role in the quest to collect all 120 Shine Sprites.

Each area in the game contains thirty blue coins and after Mario successfully cleans up Delfino Plaza from the sludge, he can enter a shop and exchange them for Shine Sprites with the store’s raccoon proprietor. It is worth noting that this raccoon shopkeeper may be a reference to a popular similar character. Regardless, the ability to trade these coins in for Shine Sprites is a greatly appreciated feature.

Delfino Airstrip

After completing the final level, players will have access to the Delfino Airstrip, which is the starting point of the game. To revisit this area, players need to defeat the final level or exit it from the start menu and then seek out a Pianta character who will charge a certain amount of coins to transport them back to the Airstrip. Here, players can collect red coins to obtain a Shine Sprite that is easily missed.

Additionally, the area also has 100 gold coins which will unlock another Shine sprite. In the original GameCube version of Super Mario Sunshine, collecting this 100-coin Shine sprite also counted as the 100-coin Shine sprite for Delfino Plaza. It is not confirmed whether this version of the game has the same rule, but if it does, players only need to collect the Shine sprite if they haven’t already obtained it in the Plaza.

Super Mario Sunshine Guide: FLUDD

During his vacation on Isle Delfino, Mario finds himself undertaking a significant amount of community service, tasked with cleaning up the dangerous graffiti left by Shadow Mario. This is where F.L.U.D.D, the water pump device comes in handy! By holding down the trigger button, players can activate F.L.U.D.D’s standard nozzle to shoot water at a distance.

Alternatively, by lightly pressing the button, Mario can move around while F.L.U.D.D. performs its cleaning functions. In addition, players can press the button in conjunction with the jump button to create a powerful, close-range water blast, effective for drenching enemies and eliminating piles of slime.

Water Slide

Mario will need to cover a lot of ground in each area of the game and F.L.U.D.D alone might not be sufficient. However, there is a way to move around quickly and efficiently, the Water Slide technique. By diving onto a wet surface, Mario can slide on water and cover a considerable distance in no time.

If there isn’t any wet surface readily available, players can utilize F.L.U.D.D to spray water on the ground ahead of Mario, allowing him to slide and move swiftly. With this technique at hand, players have a reliable and fun method to navigate through the different areas of the game.

Collect the Shine Sprite

The main objective of Super Mario Sunshine is to collect all 120 Shine Sprites which are scattered throughout the game’s levels and worlds. Shine Sprites can be earned by completing a variety of tasks such as defeating bosses, rescuing characters, and solving puzzles. Each level in the game has a set number of Shine Sprites to collect, and some levels have multiple ways to earn them.

To make sure you find all the Shine Sprites, it’s important to thoroughly explore every corner of each level. Look for hidden paths, secret areas, and obscure locations that may contain Shine Sprites. Use F.L.U.D.D’s abilities to reach new heights and uncover hidden platforms. Keep an eye out for suspicious-looking objects and obstacles, as they may be hiding Shine Sprites.

Focus on characters

It’s also important to pay attention to the characters in the game. They often give hints or provide tasks that lead to Shine Sprites. It’s also worth checking in at the local plaza often, as new tasks and levels may be unlocked as you progress through the game.

Super Mario Sunshine Guide: Shadow Mario

Shadow Mario is the main antagonist of Super Mario Sunshine and serves as the final boss of the game. He is a doppelganger of Mario and is responsible for causing trouble on Isle Delfino. Throughout the game, Shadow Mario will leave behind graffiti that Mario must clean up using F.L.U.D.D.

He will also steal F.L.U.D.D and Mario will have to chase him down to get it back. He is also the one who kidnapped Princess Peach. The final showdown with Shadow Mario will occur in the final level of the game, “Bianco Hills: Shadow Mario on the Loose”.

To defeat Shadow Mario, you must learn his patterns and strategies. He will primarily attack by throwing goo at Mario, which can be deflected back with a well-timed water spray. Shadow Mario will also create copies of himself, but they can be easily distinguished by the real Shadow Mario by the colored smoke trails they leave behind. He will also use his paintbrush to create obstacles and platforms that you must navigate around.

Super Mario Sunshine Guide: Keep spinning

At times, Mario may come across large areas covered in goop that can be time-consuming to clean. To make this task faster and more efficient, players can hold down the trigger button while Mario is spinning. This will activate F.L.U.D.D’s sprinkler-like spray that can quickly clean up the goop in a wider area around Mario.

The technique can also be combined with a jump, which will increase the radius of the sprinkler spray and makes it more effective. Additionally, F.L.U.D.D will also get the Hover nozzle early on in the game which, when paired with a spin jump, will grant Mario exceptional vertical distance. This will allows Mario to reach higher platforms and clean the goop in hard to reach places.

Replay levels

Replaying levels in Super Mario Sunshine is a great way to find missed Shine Sprites and Blue Coins that you might have overlooked during your initial playthrough. Each level in the game has a set number of Shine Sprites and Blue Coins that can be earned, but they’re not always easy to find.

By revisiting levels that you’ve already completed, you’ll have a better understanding of where to look for these collectibles. You may also find that as you replay levels you’ll discover new secrets, hidden paths, and other things you might have missed the first time around.

Replaying levels also gives you an opportunity to master the gameplay and improve your score. As you replay levels, you’ll become more familiar with the level layout, the different obstacles, and the enemies. This will help you navigate the levels more efficiently and quickly. It will also help you master the different techniques you can use with F.L.U.D.D, the Water slide, or the different fruits that grant you special abilities.

Yoshi

Approximately in the middle of the game, Mario will come across a large egg, which will hatch to reveal Yoshi, a beloved dinosaur companion. To hatch Yoshi, players need to bring a specific fruit to the egg, and then feed him after he hatches.

Once Mario has Yoshi by his side, he can ride him around the levels and make use of Yoshi’s unique flutter jump ability to reach new areas. Yoshi comes in three different colors, depending on what fruit he most recently ate. Similar to F.L.U.D.D, Yoshi also has a spray attack that can remove sponge-like obstacles and turn enemies into floating platforms. However, players must be cautious around water, as Yoshi will instantly dissolve upon contact with it.
