Southampton Opinion: Aaron Mooy would strengthen the Saints’ midfield

According to a recent report emerging from the Examiner Live, Jan Siewert’s relegated Huddersfield Town star Aaron Mooy is being linked with a potential move to a number of Premier League and Championship Clubs. The former Manchester City man was one of the only positives from the Terriers’ season.

While the likes of Leeds United, West Ham United and Newcastle United have expressed their interest in the past, Southampton and Watford and said to have entered the fold more recently.

The Saints are said to be extremely keen on the Australian star who has proven his ability to perform on the biggest stage this season.

Although his side struggled throughout the season, he was one of the lone shining stars in the side. He huffed and puffed his way through a flurry of matches and tried to make an impact but the sheer lack of quality around him was always going to create a roadblock to his consistent progress.

Despite his team’s worrying struggles going forward, he managed to notch up 3 goals in the league this season. He was a star player under the guidance of former coach David Wagner but under new management, he found it hard to find a regular place in the starting XI.

Having made 29 appearances in the campaign, the Australian’s performances possessed enough quality to convince some of the Premier League’s stronger clubs to begin plotting their move. He is capable of playing anywhere across the midfield but usually excels was deployed as one of the central midfielders.

He shows excellent movement with the ball at his feet and also has a keen eye for a long pass. Able to switch the play with ease, Mooy has the ability to see runs other players tend to miss and that talent will be useful at one of the Premier League’s more high-profile clubs.

His finishing attributes are quite strong too as we’ve seen from the goals he’s scored for the Terriers this season. Considering that the team only scored 22 goals all campaign, Aaron Mooy’s 3 begins to look like a fairly good return for a man deployed as the anchor in the midfield.

He has the experience and know-how to prosper in the Premier League and that’s why he will feel like he deserved another chance with one of the stronger clubs. A move to Southampton could make sense for the Australian. At 28, Mooy certainly isn’t getting any younger and now would the perfect time for him to move on.

Southampton have been crying out for a source of creativity other than Nathan Redmond going forward and Aaron Mooy could be the answer to their woes. His passing and movement will add a new dimension to this fairly stacked Saints attack and a move makes complete sense for both parties.
