Why Southampton should look at Bright Osayi-Samuel as one for the future

According to Football Insider (h/t MSN), Southampton have been credited with an interest in QPR winger Bright Osayi-Samuel, who has been in fine form for the R’s in the Championship this season. The report adds that some other unnamed Premier League clubs are also interested.

Osayi-Samuel is amongst those in QPR’s young brigade, also featuring the likes of Eberechi Eze and Ilias Chair, to have made a big impression under the stewardship of Mark Warburton in the Championship this season.

The 22-year-old, who rose through the youth ranks at Blackpool earlier in his career before completing a switch to Loftus Road back in the summer of 2017, only played a bit-part role in his first couple of campaigns at Loftus Road but he has come of age with a number of top-notch displays this term.

The Nigeria-born winger has contributed with 4 goals and 4 assists in 20 appearances for QPR in the Championship so far this season, having started on 17 occasions. Osayi-Samuel has been one of the key contributors for the west London outfit in the final third, primarily featuring as a right-winger in Warburton’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system.

Meanwhile, the Saints continued their surge up the Premier League standings with an impressive 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Tuesday night, thanks to two stunning goals from Nathan Redmond and Stuart Armstrong.

Southampton had their resurgence thwarted by Wolves last weekend, as the Saints let slip a two-goal advantage to slump to a bizarre 3-2 loss, but Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side fought back with a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Palace.

Having roped in the likes of Moussa Djenepo and Che Adams to bolster the attack back in the summer window, Southampton are yet to get down to business in the winter market.

Since his days at Blackpool, Osayi-Samuel has made significant strides towards fulfilling his potential at Loftus Road this term.

Verdict

While the youngster might not be an immediate upgrade on existing players like Armstrong, Sofiane Boufal, Djenepo and Michael Obafemi, Southampton would be wise to snap him up as a good long-term prospect.

Having said that, Southampton completing a move for Bright Osayi-Samuel could pay off handsomely for Hasenhuttl’s long-term plans at St. Mary’s moving forward.
