Born in Tampere, Finland, to parents of Sierra Leonean descent, Glen Kamara started his footballing education in the youth ranks of Southend United in England before joining Arsenal’s academy back in 2012. Despite establishing himself as a key player for the U-23s, Kamara made only a solitary first-team appearance for the Gunners.

The Finnish international spent time on loan at Colchester United and Southend United before moving north of the border to join Dundee in the Scottish Premiership. Kamara made 65 appearances for Dundee in all competitions before securing a move to Rangers in January 2019.

The 24-year-old has since established himself as a key player for Rangers under Gerrard, accumulating 2 goals and 3 assists in 69 appearances across all competitions (source – Transfermarkt). Kamara represented Finland at U-19 and U-21 levels before making his senior international debut in 2017 and has amassed 21 caps for his nation so far.

Why Kamara would be a fantastic signing for the Saints

It is no secret that Southampton are in dire need of midfield reinforcements. The club have let go of three midfielders, namely Mario Lemina, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harrison Reed.

This leaves them with a barebones midfield of Oriol Romeu, Stuart Armstrong, Will Smallbone and James Ward-Prowse. While they did add Ibrahima Diallo from Stade Brest, it still does not fill up the midfield ranks.

Glen Kamara would not only add to their midfield stocks but also add to the quality. The Rangers man is a trusted lieutenant of manager Steven Gerrard and you know a player is quality when a legendary midfielder of the game trusts you.

While he may be a defensive midfielder, he is also versatile enough to play in central midfield. More than anything, he will represent a huge upgrade on Oriol Romeu who is prone to the occasional rough challenge.

Kamara would be a fantastic option for Southampton if they were to pursue him and to be honest, they should. He is a cool customer and does not get fazed by the opposition. A wonderful signing he will be for Southampton if they can somehow pull the deal off.
