Why Hamza Choudhury would be a good signing for Southampton

As per the Telegraph, Southampton are interested in bringing in Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury to replenish their midfield stocks after the departures of Harrison Reed to Fulham, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Tottenham), and Mario Lemina (Fulham – loan) (source – Sky Sports).

The 22-year-old English midfielder started his youth career at Leicester’s academy in 2011 and progressed through the ranks.

While he was in the U-23’s, he was sent on loan to Burton Albion on two separate occasions and managed to make a total of 28 appearances for them. After making good use of those loan opportunities, he was called up to the Leicester first-team in 2017.

Since then, he has already racked up 50 appearances for the club while scoring a goal and setting up 2 more. Over the last few seasons, he has acted as an able deputy for first-choice defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Do Southampton need Hamza Choudhury?

With 3 prominent midfielders exiting the club before the start of this season, Southampton are down to bare bones in the middle of the park. James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu and Stuart Armstrong are the only recognised central players in the squad and the team would need to bring in at least a few new faces to make up the numbers.

Hamza Choudhury represents a viable solution, if not the best. It will be interesting to see whether Leicester sanction a sale to another Premier League club despite their stacked midfield. They already have Nampalys Mendy as another player who can cover for Ndidi.

Verdict

Southampton need players in the middle of the park and Hamza Choudhury would be a good option for them. He can cover for Ward-Prowse, Romeu and Armstrong, and can be used as a rotation option whenever required.

It is very clear that he won’t be starting games for Leicester City on a regular basis unless someone like Ndidi or Youri Tielemans makes way. With that in mind, Choudhury should consider his options in the event that Southampton come in with a serious offer.
