Why Southampton should sign Wellington Martins to add depth

According to Hampshire Live, Southampton have been linked to Brazilian midfielder Wellington Martins. The Saints are open to the idea of adding another midfielder to their side as they have just the three. A rather surprising name, Wellington, but he has been linked with a move to St. Mary’s.

Wellington Martins is a 29-year-old Brazilian midfielder who is currently a free agent. A youth product of Sao Paulo, he started his youth career in 2005 at their academy. In 2008, he was promoted to the first-team.

He went on to enjoy a good run in the side, making a name for himself. In total, he has 124 appearances for the Brazilian giants, scoring once and assisting 5. However, after a managerial change, he was loaned out quite a few times. First, he went to Internacional, then to Vasco da Gama in 2017.

On his return, he was sold to Athletico Paranaense. He went on to make close to 100 appearances for them before being released this month. Wellington made 3 appearances for Brazil U-20s but none for the senior side.

Wellington can add depth to the Southampton midifield

Southampton are having one of their best seasons in recent memory. They have done it through sheer grit, determination and as a collective group. Nonetheless, there remains some scope for improvement, especially when it comes to the squad depth.

Quite how the Saints have managed to go through almost half the season with only three recognised central midfielders is rather puzzling. Remember, they sold one of their biggest assets, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, to Spurs at the start of the season.

In that regard, signing Wellington woupld be a good and safe option for the club. The Norwegian’s numbers of 1 goal and 2 assists for Athletico Paranaense may not be mouthwatering but he is capable of doing well given his experience. He would certainly add depth to their midfield ranks.

It is clear that Southampton lack depth in the midfield. Given Wellington’s free agent status, he could be a real coup for them. He would also bring healthy competition to the squad. Thus, the Saints should lure the former Sao Paulo man to St. Mary’s.
