Southampton can move forward only if they get rid of these three lacklustre players

Southampton are struggling at the moment and while they have brought in Ralph Hasenhuttl to fix things, their new boss can only do so much. The rest comes down to the players and their desire to fight for the team to survive in the fight for relegation. That being said now that the January window is open, it gives the new boss time and space to re-vamp their side, bringing in key players to key positions.

However, to do that first he will have to let go of a few stars that currently reside at Southampton in order to make both the space and add money to their war-chest

#3 Maya Yoshida

The 30-year-old has been Southampton’s rock at the back for a long time, but now it looks like he has been replaced by Jannik Vestergaard and Wesley Hoedt, which means that the Japanese’s time at St Mary’s may be as good as over. He’s barely made 11 appearances in all competitions this season and with the club looking to bring in players to help them stay up, Yoshida could be sacrificed.

However, given how long the 30-year-old has been at the club, there is a slight chance that the Hasenhuttl may allow him to stay, to allow any youngsters to soak up his experiences. However, given that the club is facing the fight off their lives for the next six months, maybe allowing Yoshida to leave is the best option.

#2 Shane Long

Shane Long

The Irishman has struggled to find a footing this season and despite making 12 appearances this season, Long is yet to find the net. The 31-year-old struggle last season and the season before that as well scoring just 5 goals in 62 Premier League appearances.

The Saints need someone they can depend on and at the moment, Shane Long isn’t that player which means that patience is wearing thin and his time might be over. Shane Long needs to either find his form and pull up his socks or Raph Hassenhuttl will have no choice but to have him leave the club for an opportunity elsewhere.

#1 Steven Davis

Still the Saint’s captain, Davis is now barely playing for Southampton making just six appearances in all competitions this season. His injuries issues combined with other issues have made things worse for the 34-year-old and it looks like his six-year tenure with Southampton is coming to an end.

While is already 34, it shows that time is certainly not on his side. Not to mention that the club do have replacements in James Ward-Prowse, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg and Stuart Armstrong among others.
