Norwich City Opinion: Why the Canaries should avoid signing Jonny Williams

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Norwich City are one of the host of clubs looking at signing Wales international Jonny Williams ahead of their return to the Premier League next season.

The 25-year-old midfielder joined Charlton Athletic on a short-term loan in the January transfer window from Crystal Palace. He made 18 appearances for the Addicks, helping Lee Bowyer’s side to seal a return to the Championship following their dramatic League One play-off final win over Sunderland last weekend.

However, Jonny Williams is out of contract at Palace this summer, and the Welsh midfielder will become a free agent. That being said, should Norwich City sign the 25-year-old on a free transfer?

Daniel Farke

The Canaries are preparing for life in the Premier League after winning the Championship title. They are already up and running in the summer transfer window, having signed Patrick Roberts on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

Roberts has played for the likes of Celtic and Girona in his young career so has solid experience, whilst he’ll be raring to prove a point to Manchester City he can do it in the Premier League.

Norwich have an exciting attacking unit, which comprises the likes of Teemu Pukki, Emi Buendia, Marco Stiepermann and Onel Hernandez. The addition of Roberts will surely add more pace and invention to Daniel Farke’s attack. But the Norfolk club need a lot more than Roberts if they are to survive the first season back in the top-flight.

Jonny Williams will fit Farke’s style of play at the Carrow Road but he’s simply not good enough to play in the Premier League. The Welshman is a good midfielder, and he will be a smart signing for any club in the Championship aiming to challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

However, he failed to make a massive impact during his time with Crystal Palace as stiff competition and recurrent injury problems never allowed him regular game time.

Williams was excellent in Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship, showcasing his ability on and off the ball this past campaign. Even though he isn’t good enough to make the step up, the 25-year-old’s availability on a free transfer makes him a viable option for Norwich.

As far as the Canaries are concerned, they already have a settled attack and any signing that will be made should be to increase the squad depth. At 25, Williams will want to play regular first-team football and he simply isn’t going to get that at Carrow Road.

Verdict

Farke needs to be smart as well as ambitious in his transfer dealings this summer. While Williams on a free transfer appears tempting, Norwich must avoid taking a punt on the Welshman.
