Why Everton must consider signing Danny Welbeck
Everton have enjoyed a decent start to the season and currently find themselves 11th in the Premier League standings. But the striker’s position should be a major area of concern for Marco Silva. The Toffees’ star striker Cenk Tosun has struggled for goals this season.
However, the situation might change soon because according to The Mirror, Everton are keeping tabs on Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck.
Welbeck is into the final year of his contract at Arsenal and the club haven’t offered him a new deal yet (h/t The Mirror), meaning he will be a free agent next summer. He could also leave for a small fee in the winter transfer window.
Welbeck came through the ranks of Manchester United and played for the senior side for more than five years. But for the most part of his career in Manchester, he was utilized on the wings. Even when he switched Old Trafford for the Emirates, his fortunes didn’t change. Apart from a few cup games, he continued to play on the wings and was deployed as a striker only when Olivier Giroud was either injured or unavailable.
In the 2017/18 season, Welbeck fell even down in the pecking order after the arrivals of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. In the ongoing season, Unai Emery has preferred playing Lacazette as his main striker and Aubameyang on the left-wing. As a result, Welbeck has faced the same fate and is on the fringes once again.
If the move to Everton goes through, things could take a turn for Welbeck. Everton have Dominick Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse as back-ups to Tosun. However, they are relatively inexperienced and Welbeck’s oodles of knowledge and Premier League know-how could come in handy for the Merseysiders.

With nearly a decade’s worth of experience under his belt, one can say that the 27-year-old is currently in the prime of his career. A switch to Goodison Park will allow him to reunite with his former teammate Theo Walcott, who could help him settle down at the new club. There is no questioning Welbeck’s quality and at a small price, he could prove to be a bargain buy for Everton.
