Why Everton must make a January swoop for Hector Herrera

Hector Herrera has been a mainstay in FC Porto’s starting line-up for several years now but his tenure with the Portuguese club could be drawing to a close as no contract extension has been agreed yet.

Herrera, 28, has been with Porto since 2013 and is set to become a free agent at the end of this season, having rejected three separate offers of a contract extension at the club, reports the CM Jornal.

As the experienced Mexican international could be available in a cut-price deal in January, should Everton make a move for him?

Goodison Park is significantly a happier place and that is largely due to new manager Marco Silva’s excellent style of play. While results haven’t been extremely good, few can deny the club’s aesthetic football in recent times.

However, Everton do lack a combative midfielder in their ranks. Morgan Schneiderlin hasn’t lived up to the billing while Idrissa Gueye is yet to regain his sublime best in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, using Tom Davies in central midfield hasn’t worked wonders and summer recruit Andre Gomes hasn’t played any part this season due to an injury.

It’s fair to suggest that Silva should get an experienced midfielder to provide some much-needed competition for the likes of Schneiderlin and Gueye.

That said, Everton could do a good job by making a January swoop for Hector Herrera, who has just one year remaining on his current contract with Porto. The Toffees must take advantage of the contractual situation and sign him in a cut-price deal in January.

Herrera has been a brilliant servant for Porto and knows what it takes to win games. He is vastly experienced at the top level and has shown a knack for scoring and creating important goals. The Mexican is a central midfielder by trade but he is versatile and can also play either in a holding role or as an attacking midfielder.

Herrera is a classic box-to-box midfielder as he is adept at stopping opposition attacks as well as creating opportunities for his own team. He is a tireless runner and could provide legs in Everton’s midfield, which has looked clueless and devoid of energy at times this season.

With top pedigree and volumes of international experience, it is clear that Herrera has the quality to take the Merseyside outfit to the next level.
