Why Arsenal should go all out to sign Cristian Pavon in January

According to Daily Mail, Arsenal are interested in signing Argentine winger Cristian Pavon and have opened talks with Boca Juniors over a potential transfer move in January. Pavon, who currently plies his trade for Argentina outfit Boca Juniors, has caught the attention of several clubs across Europe with his impressive performances in the Argentine Primera Division (h/t Daily Mail).

The 22-year-old signed his first professional contract with Atletico Talleres in 2012 and moved to Boca Juniors in 2014. Since then, he has established himself as one of the top names in the Argentine league and also received a call-up to Argentina’s team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Pavon has made a total of 70 appearances for the club, netting 19 times so far.

However, Boca will not let their prized asset depart the club so easily and have made it clear that the 22-year-old has a release clause of £44 million (h/t Daily Mail).

Arsenal endured a poor start to the season under new manager Unai Emery with back-to-back defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Chelsea. However, the Gunners have steadied the ship with three consecutive wins over West Ham, Cardiff City, and Newcastle United.

Although they haven’t played the best brand of football in the Premier League, Arsenal find themselves 7th in the standings with nine points from their first five games.

To be fair, the fixtures haven’t been particularly kind to them as they had to fight it out against top teams in their first two games under a new manager. Regardless, things seem pretty good right now.

While some players have found it difficult to adapt their game to suit Emery’s ‘pressing’ and ‘playing from the back’ style of play, others have flourished right away. In fact, Arsenal have plenty of positives to take from the 2-1 victory over Newcastle United last weekend.

Granit Xhaka, who initially seemed like a glaring misfit for Emery’s style of play, got himself back in form and scored from a stunning free-kick. Mesut Ozil has also struggled after being shifted from a central position to a wider role but the German showed his versatility against the Magpies and repaid the manager’s faith with his first goal of the season.

Emery has successfully accommodated Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in the line-up and both the attackers have combined well. With the two strikers up front, Arsenal have created a lot more chances and have looked menacing in the attacking third.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has started three games so far and came off the bench in the other two. The Armenian has looked quite impressive on the right and already has a goal and an assist to his name. However, Alex Iwobi, one of the standout performers against Chelsea, followed it up with a poor showing against West Ham and the Nigerian is yet to cement his place in the team under Unai Emery.

As far as Cristian Pavon is concerned, the youngster is a hardworking winger who is capable of playing in multiple positions in the attacking third. A player characterized by technical excellence and speed, Pavon has often been deployed on either flank and also through the centre.

Known for being a speed machine, Pavon has a great first touch and can run comfortably with the ball at his feet. A pacy winger capable of weaving his way past the defenders with mesmerizing dribbling skills, Pavon can cut inside with pace and fire piledrivers to find the back of the net. Furthermore, he is a decent crosser and also has a keen eye for the goal during long-range efforts.

Hence, with all the above attributes, Pavon should be the ideal man to provide cover and competition for the likes of Aubameyang, Lacazette and Mkhitaryan. Emery should leave no stone unturned in his efforts to bring the Argentine to the Emirates in January.
