Why Sheffield United must sign Rangers star Glen Kamara

According to 90min (h/t Liverpool Echo), Sheffield United are one of the clubs interested in Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

The Finland international joined Rangers in January 2019 from fellow Scottish club Dundee and has gone on to become a key player under new boss Steven Gerrard.

He made 39 appearances for Rangers last season, helping the club finish second behind leaders Celtic. A defensive midfielder by trade, Kamara is also equally comfortable playing in a more central role, making him an integral part of the current Rangers squad.

Meanwhile, Kamara’s swift rise through the ranks at Rangers last season has seen him attracting interests from Premier League sides including Sheffield United, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, and Southampton.

Kamara can offer Sheffield depth in their midfield

Sheffield United, on the other hand, had an impressive maiden season in the Premier League after earning promotion to the top-flight following their 2018-19 Championship triumph. Chris Wilder’s side finished 9th in the league rankings this term and will be now keen to bolster their squad in order to stay in the top division.

Despite an impressive start to their 2019-20 campaign, the Blades lacked a defensive midfielder in their ranks. This saw them rope in young Norwegian Sander Berge from Genk back in January. The 22-year-old has since then become a key member of Sheffield United’s midfield.

Berge made 14 Premier League appearances after his arrival, suggesting that he is clearly in Wilder’s plan for the future. However, apart from Berge, the Blades still lack depth in the holding midfield role, making complete sense of the club’s interest in the 24-year-old Kamara.

Also, Sheffield have just three central midfielders – John Fleck, John Lundstram and Olivier Norwood at the moment. However, Lundstram’s long-term future with the club remains uncertain. The 26-year-old is attracting attention from elsewhere.

Sheffield would not be left with too many options in the middle if Lundstram chooses to depart. Hence, Kamara’s arrival, by all means, looks like a welcome sign.

Also, being a versatile midfielder, Kamara’s inclusion will be an added benefit for any side, let alone Sheffield. Hence, the Blades must push ahead with their efforts to sign Kamara and bring him to the Bramall Lane as soon as possible.

Verdict

First of all, it is evident that Sheffield lack depth in defensive midfield. Kamara, who has proved himself at Rangers, would be a great option to consider. His arrival would add some valuable depth to Sheffield United and this would be useful as they embark on yet another Premier League season.
