Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should go for Kieran Dowell?

According to a report from the Liverpool Echo, Sheffield United are weighing up a move to re-sign Kieran Dowell from Everton. The Blades prefer a loan deal, but that will mean that their Premier League loan limit will be reached if they sign Dean Henderson from Manchester United as well.

Kieran Dowell, 21, played his part in the Blades being promoted to the Premier League after joining on loan in January. He made 16 appearances and scored two goals as Chris Wilder’s side finished second in the Championship table.

The Yorkshire giants are only allowed two loans from fellow Premier League clubs and it seems as though Dean Henderson will be one as he prepares to rejoin the club from Manchester United. So, it means United have to sign Dowell from Everton permanently.

And Wilder must definitely do that, as he plans to build his squad capable of surviving the first season back in top-flight.

The Blades are in dire need of attacking reinforcements after loanees Scott Hogan and Gary Madine have returned back to their clubs. That has left Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick as the only two recognised strikers in Wilder’s squad. Mark Duffy, the team’s only attacking midfielder, will turn 34 in October, meaning a creative no.10 is the need of the hour.

Wilder is very likely to get a limited budget to spend in the summer transfer window. The 51-year-old has to spot bargains capable of playing at a higher level. To that end, Kieran Dowell would fit the billing perfectly at Bramall Lane.

Dowell is an attacking midfielder by trade, but he can also play in central midfield and showed his versatility by operating at left-back for United this past season. He is a good passer of the ball, creative and composed finisher in front of goal. The England youth international can provide that little bit of magic in the final third to open up stubborn defences.

The 21-year-old is unlikely to get much playing time under Marco Silva at Everton and a return to Bramall Lane would surely appeal to the player.

Verdict

Dowell is one of the brightest young talents in the Toffees ranks for some time now but he hasn’t been able to break into the first-team as of now. Thus, he would stand a far better chance of getting regular football at Sheffield United.

Without any second thoughts, Wilder and co. must go all out to sign Dowell from Everton.
