Shawn started training under a Mexican wrestler Jose Lothario. He then adopted the name of “Shawn Michaels.”
Hickenbottom made his first debut as Shawn Michaels with the NWA on October 16, 1984, against Art Crews.
From 1984 until 1988, he played for many international circuits like NWA, Texas All-Star Wrestling, AWA. And finally arrived in the WWF scenario in 1988 by teaming with Marth Jennetty as Midnight Rockers.

Shawn adopted a new nickname, “The Heartbreak Kid,” at the suggestion of Curt Henning. He became a cocky villain.

At the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, Michaels delivered a Sweet Chin Music to The Undertaker from coming underneath the ring and cost Taker the World Heavyweight Championship.
