He excelled on all of the court surfaces of his time: grass, clay, hard, carpet, and wood. Laver is the only player in the Open Era to have won the Calendar Grand Slam, and also the only player in history to have done it twice, again in 1969.

Rod Laver won 200 career titles and rose to the #1 ranking in 1961. He won the Australian Open in 1960, 1962, and 1969 and the French Open in 1962 and 1969. ‘Rocket’ won Wimbledon in 1961, 1962, 1968, and 1969. He won the US Open in 1969 and 1969.

He also had 28 doubles titles including at the Australian Open in 1959, 1960, 1961, and 1969 and at the French Open in 1961, Wimbledon in 1970, and the US Open in 1960, 1970, and 1973.

He became a member of the Australian Davis Cup squad at the age of 18. The Australian won most titles in a single year with 18.

The Rod Laver Arena at Centre Court in Melbourne was named after him in 2000 and he is a member of the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.  He is a ‘Member of the Order of the British Empire’, after his glorious service to the game.

In 1966, Laver got married to Mary Shelby Peterson, a divorcee with three children from her previous marriage in California. The invitees included fellow players like Ken Rosewall, Barry MacKay, Mal Anderson, and Lew Hoad.

The couple also have a son named Rick Laver.
