Riot unveils Gameplay Trailer for new Fighting Game: Project L

With a new look at its gameplay systems, Riot Games is on track to meet its deadline for its League of Legends fighter, Project L. It is being released just in time to meet that deadline. Executive producer Tom Cannon and game director Shaun Rivera provide this latest look at Project L on Riot’s official YouTube channel.

Illaoi was introduced by Canon in the video, who explained previous iterations were early designs for the champion. With today’s Illaoi combat footage showing off a version of the character that is about 30% completed, it seems those pieces for her model and fully fleshed out kit are coming together.

We get a closer look at some of the signature features of Project L’s big body brawler, including her golden artifact and Nagakabouros tentacles. Cannon notes Illaoi is now live in Riot’s internal playtest. Riot previously explained the game’s easy-to-learn but difficult-to-master mentality in previous Project L updates.

Using these same principles, Rivera began his design philosophy breakdown, outlining how movement, offense, defense, tag-teaming, and assist actions will all be built on those pillars. With champions who can walk, run, dash, chain dash, jump, long jump, and super jump, Riot conjures up some of these fighting game staples for Project L, showing how it’s taking movement to a whole new level.

According to Rivera, some champions would have more distinctive movement options in the air, while Ahri’s flier jumps resembled her MOBA move Spirit Rush.

One-v-one game

It was originally intended that Project L would be a one-on-one competition between two champions in which one would emerge victorious. “Two years ago, we changed to an assist-based tag team fighter. We have built a powerful tag system that is flexible and deep, aimed at unlocking your creativity”, he added. Two champion teams can take down opponents together when they work with our champions.

Team Fights

The tentatively named Assist Actions, Handshake Tag, and Dynamic Save are Rivera’s three elements that guide Project L’s take on team fighting. Depending on how you execute your Assist Actions, each champion will have two. Players can swap out their characters with Handshake Tag as long as both teammates are on screen, and these can be chained together with Assist Actions to create more complex moves.

Dynamic Save

In terms of Dynamic Save, it is Project L’s combo breaker. Rivera warned players to be careful about timing Dynamic Saves, since they can be countered if you are too predictable. It can be a clutch save for tagging out a champion for another.

Although Riot hasn’t made many updates since announcing Project L three years ago, the developer has gradually increased its development efforts. Recently, Riot confirmed that we’ll be able to play it for free. Additionally, the company emphasised that their fighter will not provide players with NFTs, despite some reports to the contrary.
