Rangers Opinion: Gers should hijack Derby loanee Max Lowe from Aberdeen

According to Daily Star, Rangers have joined the race to sign Derby County left-back Max Lowe, who has excelled on loan at Aberdeen this season.

The Daily Star understands that Aberdeen are keen to secure Lowe’s services on loan for another season but Rangers are considering a hijack to bring the talented 22-year-old to Ibrox this summer.

The same source claims that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has contacted his old England teammate and Derby boss Frank Lampard to inquire about the possibility of having Lowe on loan for the upcoming season, although it is understood that the Rams are unlikely to let the 22-year-old depart on a permanent basis.

Rangers have already done plenty of business ahead of the summer transfer window, including the acquisition of Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones from Motherwell and Kilmarnock respectively on pre-contract deals. The Gers have also struck a deal for Southampton loanee Steven Davis, who is set to join the club permanently at the end of the season.

Steven Gerrard, however, is keen to add more depth to his squad in the transfer window to ensure that he has all his bases covered heading into the upcoming season. Despite all the promise that they have shown this season, the Gers have once again fallen short of Celtic in the title race and Gerrard seems to be well aware of that, as he prepares to bring silverware to the club in his second season in charge.

Rangers’ links with Max Lowe comes as little surprise to the fans at Ibrox given that the 22-year-old has enjoyed a wonderful run on his loan spell at Aberdeen this season. Lowe made 3 appearances for Derby earlier in the campaign before being shipped out on loan to Aberdeen where he has contributed with 3 goals and 2 assists from 41 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Derby County are set to face Aston Villa in the EFL Playoff finals later in the month after a remarkable comeback victory over Leeds United in the second leg of the semi-finals. However, Lowe has only played a bit-part role for the Rams since making his debut in the 2016-17 season, with Scott Malone establishing himself as the first-choice left-back under Lampard.

Lowe’s rapid development in Scotland should prompt the former Chelsea legend to allow him to go out on loan to Rangers for the upcoming season given that there is a possibility of European exposure for the youngster.

To put things into perspective, Rangers can certainly do with another left-back in their ranks. They brought in Croatian international Borna Barisic last summer and although the 26-year-old has impressed at times, he has spent considerable time on the sidelines due to injuries.  Jon Flanagan has also done a good job for the Gers down that left-hand side of the backline but Max Lowe can provide much-needed cover and competition in a key area of the pitch.
