Why Rangers should secure the signing of Morgan Fox

According to a report from TEAMtalk (h/t The Scotsman), Rangers are interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday defender Morgan Fox, who could be set to leave the club this summer when his contract expires. The Welshman is also a target for the likes of Burnley, Norwich City and Middlesbrough among other clubs.

The 26-year-old Fox came through the youth ranks at Charlton Athletic. After a brief loan spell at Notts County in 2013/14, he became a regular for the Addicks. Fox went on to make 116 first-team appearances for the Addicks, scoring one goal and assisting nine more.

In the summer of 2017, the left-back was signed by Sheffield Wednesday. Till date, Fox has featured 102 times for the Owls. He has managed to contribute with four goals and six assists in the process.

Rangers in need of reinforcements at left-back

Rangers fell short in their pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title once again. With the season getting cut short because of the pandemic, Steven Gerrard’s side finished second behind leaders Celtic, with a thirteen-point gap between the two.

For the Gers to close down that gap and stop their rivals from a 10th consecutive league title win next term, it goes without saying that the squad needs to be strengthened. Rangers boast of the joint-best defensive record in the Premiership for the 2019/20 season. However, defensive reinforcements will be needed come summer, especially for the left-back slot.

During the 2019/20 term, Rangers had three options at left-back in Borna Barisic, Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday. However, the latter two are out of contract with the Ibrox giants, with the club already confirming that they will not be offered extensions.

This would leave Gerrard with just Barisic as the only out-and-out left-back in the squad. Hence, bringing in a new left-sided full-back this summer should be a priority for Rangers. Having said that, Morgan Fox would be a handy addition for the Light Blues.

The 26-year-old has had a decent 2019/20 campaign for Sheffield Wednesday. So far, he has made 31 appearances across all competitions, contributing with three goals and a solitary assist. He has already accumulated a lot of experience, having made 225 career appearances till date.

Signing him would provide some much-needed depth in the left-back slot for Gerrard and Rangers. Furthermore, at 26, Fox is entering his peak years and the Gers would stand to benefit greatly from it. And the fact that he will cost nothing in transfer fee only makes the deal even more attractive.

With the contracts of Halliday and Flanagan running out, Rangers are left with Barisic as the only left-back. Hence, signing Fox once his contract with Sheffield Wednesday expires would help them add more depth and quality to the side in the position.
